From November 1st onwards, cash will no longer be accepted as payment on buses in Aarhus.

Transportation company, Midttrafik, announced that all ticket machines on city buses will be removed by the end of 2023. The removal was due to the high cost of maintenance and a decrease of sales of cash tickets.

In a company statement Midttrafik further stated the difficulty to obtain parts of the ticket machine and few specialist technicians were also the reason behind the removal.

The change has received backlash from organisations concerned about elderly people. With Denmark’s proficiency in cashless payment, many worry that the ageing population will be unable to keep up with the change.

To counter this, Midttrafik has launched a Mobile Customer Service and urged senior citizens to apply for a Rejsekort or a Pensionkort.
