Last year, the city of Aarhus received a permit to expand its port further into the harbor, which would allow for more shipping vessels and increased capacity for trade – about 5.5 million additional tonnes of goods annually.
In addition to the infrastructural improvements in the harbor, the project known as Aarhus Ø (Aarhus East) is well underway with the goal of merging the harbor with the city center and drawing in new residents. The quarter is marked by the construction of modern, high-rise housing projects like the Lighthouse, which will be the tallest building in Denmark when it is completed this year.
While the harbor projects allow for more economic and residential growth, they will also have a significant impact on the environment in the form of increased CO2 emissions from construction and increased freighter traffic, as well as an increased annual expulsion of waste.
