The drums start before the handball game itself. On the sidelines, behind one of the goals are the four drummers, creating a backtrack to the cheer of the audience. They support Aarhus United handball team through all the games they can.
“We’re always there when it’s home, and most of the time when they’re away,” says Poul Cristensen, one of the guys drumming. It’s the local connection that makes them support their club.
“They’re from Aarhus, we’re from Aarhus,” he says during halftime when they put the drumsticks down and rest for a bit. And put their shirts back on.
It’s a tradition that when the team is in the lead with at least eight goals, the drummers take their shirts of.
“I don’t know why, it’s an old tradition, even since the team that was here before.”
And it is a loyal troop of supporters that the team has, some of them have supported the old handball team in Aarhus, and now the new one for the five years that this new team has existed, and they want to continue to cheer on the team to get into top eight this year.
“We’ve been here all the time,” Poul Cristensen says.
