The municipality of Aarhus collects thousands of abandoned bicycles every year. This year, some of them are being sent to war-torn Ukraine.
After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year, the municipality of Aarhus cancelled its twinning cooperation with St. Petersburg to instead establish contact with the city of Lviv in Ukraine.
As an act of solidarity in this new partnership, 300 abandoned bicycles will be sent to Lviv. In many cities in Ukraine, municipal transport is completely out of order – why there’s a big need of bicycles.
Last Friday, volunteers in Aarhus gathered to check through the collected bicycles.
- There were 82 bikes in good shape and around 170 bikes that needs reparation. And we still need to collect 300 bikes all together before we can ship them to Ukraine, says Peter Marker, chief consultant at the Aarhus mayor’s secretariat.
Next week the commune will ask volunteers to look through bikes again. If you’re interested, keep an eye on the commune’s facebook page.
